INTRODUCTION

Peking University First Hospital (also called “Beida” Hospital) was founded in 1915, which is a large comprehensive tertiary hospital integrating medical services with teaching, research and preventive medicine. It is the Central Government Designated Hospital.

Beida Hospital was one of the first-batch clinical medical schools, and was initially the affiliated clinic of Beijing Medical School approved by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. In 1946, it became a part of Peking University (also known as Beida) and was renamed as Beida Hospital. Its current name, Peking University First Hospital, was designated after the reunion of Beijing Medical University and Peking University integrated at 2000. In 2008, it was appointed as Central Government Designated Hospital.

In the past century, our hospital established the first Pediatrics Teaching and Research Office (1929), the first Urology Department (1946), the major of Nephrology (1950), the first Cardiovascular Ward in general hospital (1950s), and Pediatric Neurology (1961) in China. We are also in the leading position among domestic colleagues on the performance of intravenous anesthesia (1951), surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases (1950s), kidney transplantation (1960), artificial crystal embedding (1983), coronary intervention (1986), thoracoscopic surgery (1992), self-blood callback (1997), mini-incision lung transplantation (2005) and percutaneous ventricular reconstruction (2013), and so on. Therefore, Peking University First Hospital has made outstanding contributions to Chinese medical industry.

Peking University First Hospital has 36 clinical departments, 11 technological departments, 1 research department, 4 research institutes, a total of 59 wards with 1805 opening beds. Averagely 10,000 outpatients are treated in this hospital per day. Over 100,000 patients are admitted, with about 40,000 operations completed per year. The hospital has over 3,600 full time employees, including about 250 with a professional title of professor equivalent, and over 300 with a professional title of associate professor equivalent. Prof. Guo, Yinglu of Urology Department in our hospital was honored as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999, which is a national and independent organization, composed of elected members with the highest honor in the community of engineering and technological sciences of the nation.

Our hospital gains a reputation of complete disciplines with high-leveled general diagnosis and treatment. We have a National Clinical Medical Research Center. Totally 19 specialties of our hospital have been admitted in the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Program (18 key specialties and 1 key specialty lab). The hospital has several peak and plateau disciplines, including 12 National Key Disciplines, National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, National Medical Device Clinical Trial Institution and the first batch of Beijing Research Ward Demonstration Project Unit. As a Class A insurance hospital, we are providing medical security services to 20 million Beijing citizens who are ensured by the basic medical insurance. At the same time, the hospital is responsible for the medical care of 60,000 persons at government expense and the health care for one eighth of the senior government officials. Among all the outpatients of our hospitals, one third of them are patients with stubborn diseases coming from all over the country.

As the oldest affiliated medical hospital of Peking University, over 3, 300 undergraduates and over 3, 800 graduates have received trainings from our hospital since 1977, including 1, 900 with master degree, 1, 800 with doctorate degree and over 115 post-doctoral fellows. At present, the hospital has tremendous teaching responsibilities with an enrollment of more than 300 students from the eight year doctoral programs, 590 students form master programs, and about 400 undergraduates of the nursing school. In addition, our hospital is responsible for the CME of about 20,000 persons annually.

Our scientific research has been in the leading position in China for many years. In the past five years, the hospital has been approved for a total of nearly 1,600 national, provincial, municipal, school-level projects and horizontal subjects, as well as clinical trials, with a funding of approximately 1.1 billion yuan. More than 5,300 papers have been published, and nearly 3,000 papers have been included in SCI (Science Citation Index), some of which have been published in international elite journals such as New Engl J Med, Lancet, Blood, Am J Hum Genet, etc. We have honored more than 40 scientific and technological achievement awards from the State, the Ministry of Education, Beijing Municipality, and the Chinese Medical Association, including 19 national and ministerial-level awards.

Forging ahead in the New Era, Peking University First Hospital People will carry forward the lofty professional spirit and the great anti-epidemic spirit, and work hard with noble medical ethics, superb medical skills, and rigorous medical standards. With a hundred years of history and fruitful achievements, in front of the mission and responsibility in the New Era, Peking University First Hospital People will continue to inherit the core values of "Inspire Virtue and Revere the Dao", pursue the vision "To be the Benchmark for Medical Services", and carry forward the humanistic connotation of " Loving Care for Life". On the road to realize the great revival of the Chinese dream, we hold the dream of being “a national medical base and a world-class academic hospital”, based on the action plan “Educating people with high moral standards as our duty, Doing academic researches for the future”. We will focus on academic competence and create a city medical axis: with the Central Campus accomplishing national assignment in the central point, Miyun Campus providing medical care in the north end and Daxing Campus developing from an international perspective in the south end. We will stay true to the original aspiration of "a century of accumulation and hard work" and start the new journey of "three decades of dream building in the New Era."
